Ever thought about how the internet is the same as the universe? The similarities between the world wide web and the world itself are quite obvious and stark once you start thinking about it. Here are some ways in which the internet and life are similar. These are ways in which we create our own reality.
Our reality is based on what we pay attention to
The ads that we stop to pay attention to or those that we click on are the ones that are served up to us over and over again. This is true for the things we search on Google too. Over time, if we search for a specific kind of information, it literally covers most of our social media feeds and pages. Something happens that we are sometimes unaware of on the internet too. We start reading, seeing, and listening to the things that we pay attention to, and those, in turn, form our beliefs, thoughts, and ultimately, our reality.
In reality too, we become what we pay attention to. Whatever we choose to fill our minds with or seek out becomes our reality. If you keep telling yourself that you are not good enough to do something, you will you will actually not be able to do it. If you spend time with people who talk about entrepreneurship, you will start to get attracted towards that. If you live with people who constantly complain, you are likely to be pulled into that whirlpool too (unless of course if you are very careful and conscious not to do so).
What we think is what the universe sends back to us
The ads that are served to us depend on the amount of time we spend on specific ads. Similarly, what we think about consciously or unconsciously is the vibe that the universe picks up and circles back to us and that defines our reality. Those who practice the law of attraction believe this to such an extent that they are always cognizant about the thought that is running in their head. Once you are aware of this reality, you will see how the coincidences start to stack up.
I started my coaching practice and was struggling with marketing myself. As I started to think consciously about ways in which I could do that, I was introduced to lots of people from the most unlikely walks of life that ended up helping me in the process. My reality changed as I paid more attention to thoughts about connecting with the right people.
The choices we make depend on the questions we seek
The options that each one of us has in life are endless. In fact, there is nothing that stops us from taking any path that we want to. However, the questions that we do not ask remain unknown and therefore closed to us forever. Those will never become a part of what reality means to us.
For example, after I finished my post-graduation, I always had an option to work in India or apply for a job out of the country. But I never really thought about leaving the country specifically and just went along with the campus interviews. I never asked what was needed to get out of the country and what it could mean for the family income. And therefore, that is a path that I never ended up evaluating or taking.
Our path is decided by the choices we make
If you have ever clicked on a link or an ad, you know how you will continue to see options in that area. If you search for vacation spots or trekking areas, you are likely to be fed all kinds of resort options and trails in your area. Similarly, the choices you make decide the shape that your life will take and the reality we create for ourselves.
For me this manifested very starkly when I decided to ask what I ‘really’ wanted to do with my life. From being a marketing professional to a freelance internet marketer, I moved into a completely different industry. A change like that came about only when I asked and then explored what actions made me feel fulfilled and happy.
What we get offered by the universe depends on our past actions too
Just as the branches of a tree, the path that keeps opening to us depends on the past choices that we make. With each and every decision or choice, we close some paths to us forever. Some of these paths are retraceable, others are lost to us forever.
Once someone goes down the path of having a child, going back to not being a parent is not a choice anyone has. One can decide the kind of parent one wants to be, but one will remain a parent anyway! On the other hand, my choice of career was something I was able to retrace and start anew as soon as I realized where my passion is.
Effort is (almost) always rewarded with rewards
On online platforms when we pay, we get access to premium content like movies, serials, workshops, and more. In the real world, when we pay (meaning put in the effort), life gives us access to more opportunities. Not all paid content is great on the internet and sometimes in the real world, despite our effort, the results are not as expected/desired. But unless we pay or make the effort, we will never know what the content or reward/consequence could be.
We leave a mark on this world with all that we do
Just as we leave a digital footprint with every site that we visit, we leave a certain mark on the world. The internet giants create a large amount of data for those who are heavy users of the internet and a complex persona is created for them. Those who live life to the fullest, acting in the best interest of others and the world, leave a mark upon the lives of all those they have touched. For some the footprint is large and for some it is limited to a few people.
On a lighter note, the tech companies are watching each and every move that you make on the internet. Facebook and Google are looking into what conversations you have, the questions you are searching, the links that you choose to click on, the ads that you linger over, the content that you upload, the videos that you watch, and the podcasts that you listen to.
And just like that, the universe is keeping a watch on each and every move you make in real life.
So, tread carefully and with complete consciousness lest you fumble and stumble in the matrix/maya.
The universe is full of abundance and so is the internet. However, it is important to understand how to operate both of these. Reach out to discuss how you can make the most of the immense potential of the universe (or the internet)!

I agree about the similarities between the universe and the internet. But one major difference is the internet uses that information to track us and the data is available to the highest bidder. So it is best to mix up our searches and the content we consume. We may not be able to confuse the universe but we can surely confuse the internet.
Ha – such a good one – we can surely confuse the internet!
I often suggest that we always search both sides of the arguement if we are searching for something in Google to avoid confirmation bias.
For example, if I search for ‘health benefits of avocados’ then I should also search for ‘disadvantages of eating avocdos’ to get a balanced view and to (as you say) confuse the algorithms!
